The defining development in the history of “High German” is the sweeping sequence of consonant changes affecting Germanic *p,*t,*k, *b,*d,*g, and *ê, collectively called the Second Consonant Shift. This shift began and reached its greatest extent in the Upper German dialects in the southern part of the German linguistic area, Alemannic, Gentry/f3/26-52 8/21/2002 10:48 AM Page 36 . 36 and Bavarian. , they are “Low German” dialects. The Second Consonant Shift unfolds for the most part prior to the period of our first Old High German texts, but we can determine with some certainty that the change occurred roughly between the sixth and eighth centuries.
While some of these loans did eventually spread to the language of other social classes and are preserved in the modern standard language, still others fall out of use.
