Perhaps most people didn’t have them. One I remember was a Vauxhall Victor, which was like a large Viva, and a few houses along, in about 1975, someone bought a Princess which seemed very flash and modern back then. The only other car in the street that sticks in my mind was a white Lotus sports car, which reminded me of the car belonging to The Saint or The Persuaders. It was very unusual to know someone who owned a sports car back in the 1970s. Nowadays, they’re everywhere. Green Shield Stamps were very popular at one time and the garages would offer you double stamps if you bought your petrol there.
He was met with stony silence. He then asked us if we ever read the newspaper. Every kid said that the only reason they read the paper was to see what was on the telly. That was our lives back then – getting home from school, going out to play or watching all the great programmes on the TV. We had no concerns about world news, politics, the price of beans or anything else. The most we worried about was homework or if we’d forgotten our PE kit. About twice a week we would have PE. This would take place in the assembly hall and there would be ropes set up to climb, a vaulting horse, parallel bars, footballs, balance beams and gym mats.
The films normally came in three reels, which meant that there was some interruption halfway through when one of the reels came to an end. The films would always be shown in the ‘music room’. The music room was so called because it had a few musical instruments in it that had all seen better days. The only film that I can remember being treated to was Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which was the old black and white version starring John Mills. It was good to just get the afternoon off lessons, even if the film wasn’t the latest James Bond!
